| The purpose of this panel presentation is to present the Bring Diversity to Nursing (BDN) project as it relates to Youth & Career Development, “Seeding the Pipeline” for the future healthcare workforce. BDN is a novel program developed by the University of Massachusetts Lowell nurse faculty to inform, recruit, retain and graduate minority and disadvantaged students. The aim of this program is to increase the diversity of the workforce via a multi-pronged approach to recruit and graduate diverse nurses who are successful at passing the state board examination. Program activities include pre-entry initiatives for elementary, middle and high school students as well as retention initiatives for students enrolled in the UML nursing program. Additionally, the presentation will include the successes and challenges of this novel approach along with future goals for its sustainability. |
The presentation will explore the legal foundation for language access; present findings based on data reported by hospitals during Federal FY2006; discuss methods of providing interpreter services and variations in quality; number of interpreting sessions conducted statewide, by region, and community type; percentage of interpreting sessions conducted in hospital emergency rooms, identify hospitals with highest number of interpreting sessions, and show languages that hospitals encountered most frequently and how they ranked; outline MDPH work with Massachusetts health care system to ensure compliance with language access mandates; and offer a conclusion and recommendations for further enhancement to language access.
